Along the Silk Road, distance was told in fersengs. At every one stood a stone, and the stones watched everything pass.

Ferseng is the old measure of the road, and the stone that marked it: how far a caravan had come, how far was left.

The collection is bound like a manuscript: each folio gathers rugs drawn from one subject of the miniature tradition.
In a miniature, nothing recedes. Every figure stands on the same plane, and so does every thread.
