Ivory Meadow Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, this rug sets the grand vocabulary of the Ziegler and Sultanabad tradition on a warm ivory ground: large serrated palmettes, lotus blossoms, curling leaves and slender stems rise in mirror symmetry along a central axis, like a garden seen in full bloom. Against the pale field, the flowers read with unusual clarity in burgundy, navy, mulberry, terracotta, saffron, moss green and soft turquoise. The soft streaking in the ground, known as abrash, comes from hand-spun wool dyed in small lots and gives the rug the depth of an antique piece.

The wide main border carries a row of stylized flowering shrubs on the same ivory ground, framed by zigzag guard stripes, and both ends finish with a multicolor flat-woven band and short ivory fringe.

The pile is dense and soft underfoot, with the resilience that lets a hand-knotted wool rug serve a household for decades; the cotton warp keeps it lying flat and true. The light ground makes it an easy anchor for both traditional and contemporary rooms, and a natural partner for dark wood and deep-toned furniture.
