About this piece
Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, this rug sets the garden vocabulary of the Ziegler and Sultanabad tradition on a lighter, denim-toned blue. The drawing here is finer and more delicate than on a classic indigo piece: rosette palmettes, lotus blossoms and sunflower-like roundels are joined by slender stems, small daisy sprigs and sprays of tiny blooms, all rising in mirror symmetry along a central axis. Against the mid-blue field the colors stay warm and clear: terracotta, rust, burgundy, saffron, olive, cream and pale turquoise. The soft horizontal streaking in the ground, known as abrash, is the natural mark of hand-spun wool dyed in small lots and gives the blue the depth of worn denim.
The wide main border carries a row of stylized flowering shrubs on the same blue ground, framed by zigzag guard stripes, and both ends finish with a multicolor flat-woven band and short ivory fringe.
The pile is dense and soft underfoot, with the resilience that lets a hand-knotted wool rug serve a household for decades; the cotton warp keeps it lying flat and true. The mid-tone blue is lighter and more relaxed than a traditional navy, which makes it an easy match for pale walls, natural wood and both coastal and classic interiors.

Good to know
Hand-knotted rugs show slight variations in size, color and motif; these are characteristics of handwork, not flaws. We recommend a rug pad on hard floors. Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; professional cleaning when needed.
