About this piece
Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, this rug belongs to the Khal Mohammadi tradition of northern Afghanistan, the Turkmen weaving family known in the West as Bokhara. Its signature is immediately recognizable: a deep, saturated red ground, almost the whole rug in a single rich crimson, carrying an orderly all-over repeat of diamond-shaped guls in offset rows, each gul filled with tiny rosettes and framed in near-black navy, with a dense lattice of small flower heads and hooked motifs between them. The drawing is crisp and geometric, the colors restrained to red, deep navy-black, ivory and small touches of gold and green, which is exactly what gives these rugs their calm, almost architectural richness.
A wide system of borders frames the field: several narrow guard stripes with running floral and hooked motifs, a main border of large stepped medallions on red, and an outer band of small ivory crenellations that reads like a fine white edge around the whole composition. Both ends finish with a striped flat-woven band and ivory fringe.
Khal Mohammadi rugs are prized for their lustrous, tightly packed wool, which takes a soft sheen under light and wears exceptionally well; the cotton warp keeps the rug lying flat and true. The deep red ground hides daily use gracefully, making this a practical choice for living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, and a classic one: a red Bokhara-style rug has anchored traditional Western interiors for more than a century, and it brings instant warmth to a room of dark wood, leather and cream walls.

Good to know
Hand-knotted rugs show slight variations in size, color and motif; these are characteristics of handwork, not flaws. We recommend a rug pad on hard floors. Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; professional cleaning when needed.
