About this piece
Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, this rug carries the same grand Ziegler and Sultanabad vocabulary as its indigo and ivory companions, here on a cool silver-grey ground that reads as a soft, cloudy steel. Oversized palmettes, serrated leaves, lotus blossoms and slender stems rise in mirror symmetry across the field, and against the quiet grey the colors come forward with real warmth: burgundy, rust, saffron gold, navy, olive and a bright peacock turquoise that catches the eye from across the room. The gentle streaking in the ground, known as abrash, is the natural mark of hand-spun wool dyed in small lots.
The wide main border repeats a row of stylized flowering shrubs on the same grey ground, framed by zigzag guard stripes, and both ends finish with a multicolor flat-woven band and short ivory fringe.
The pile is dense and soft underfoot, with the resilience that lets a hand-knotted wool rug serve a household for decades; the cotton warp keeps it lying flat and true. Grey is the easiest ground to live with in a contemporary interior: it sits comfortably with white walls, pale oak, linen and leather, while the pattern brings the depth and color of a classic Oriental carpet.

Good to know
Hand-knotted rugs show slight variations in size, color and motif; these are characteristics of handwork, not flaws. We recommend a rug pad on hard floors. Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; professional cleaning when needed.
