Miniature Printed Carpet - Ushak

A great lobed medallion fills the centre of a terracotta field, built of almond-shaped leaves in lapis, ivory and sage that radiate from a small jewelled heart. Quarter medallions of the same leaves gather in the four corners, as if the pattern runs on beneath the border. This is the layout of the medallion carpets woven in Uşak in western Anatolia in the sixteenth century, the Ottoman court's answer to the illuminated book cover. A madder border of gilt arabesque closes the field.

Printed on polyester chenille, a soft, velvety surface with a faint sheen that takes colour the way good paper takes ink. High-resolution digital printing carries every hairline of the design onto the rug, from the smallest leaf to the vine in the border.
