Miniature Printed Carpet - Shutur

A single camel stands on an open ivory field, and look closer: its body is built entirely of other creatures. Hares, birds, fish, tortoises and butterflies fit together like a puzzle in gold, coral, turquoise and lapis to make the whole beast. Composite animals of this kind were a favourite of the album painters of Persia, the Deccan and Mughal India in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A chocolate border of gilt arabesque frames the scene.

Printed on polyester chenille, a soft, velvety surface with a faint sheen that takes colour the way good paper takes ink. High-resolution digital printing carries every hairline of the design onto the rug, from the smallest leaf to the vine in the border.
