Miniature Printed Carpet - Rumman

A single great pomegranate fills a sage field, its madder rind split open to show a lapis heart. Inside, the seeds are arranged into a rosette of smaller pomegranates in coral, ivory and gold, each one opening onto the next. Blossoming branches rise from the lower corners and bend in from the top. Rumman is the pomegranate in Arabic, a fruit of the gardens of paradise and a sign of plenty from Andalusia to Samarkand. An olive border of gilt flowering vine frames the fruit.

Printed on polyester chenille, a soft, velvety surface with a faint sheen that takes colour the way good paper takes ink. High-resolution digital printing carries every hairline of the design onto the rug, from the smallest leaf to the vine in the border.
