Miniature Printed Carpet - Ciragan

Rows of coral tortoises cross an ivory field, sage heads and feet just touching, and here and there one carries a lit candle on its shell. The scene comes from the Tulip Era of early eighteenth-century Istanbul, when the court held çirağan, night festivals of light in the tulip gardens, and tortoises bearing candles were set to wander slowly among the flowers. An olive border of gilt flowering vine frames the garden.

Printed on polyester chenille, a soft, velvety surface with a faint sheen that takes colour the way good paper takes ink. High-resolution digital printing carries every hairline of the design onto the rug, from the smallest leaf to the vine in the border.
